Case Of The Week: Breast Implants Rupture

Our patient today had breast surgery 7 years ago. She had implants because she wanted larger breasts.

Everything went well so far but, recently, she felt like her right breast felt different.

She decided to go see her plastic surgeon to make sure everything was ok.

When she went there, she couldn’t quite explain what the feeling was. The breast was not larger. She didn’t feel a mass or a lump and it didn’t hurt either.

But somehow it felt different than it used to a few weeks ago, like it had a different consistency.

The doctor saw her and ordered an ultrasound and MRI scan.

We performed the MRI where we found this:

MRI showing breast implant intracapsular rupture

Indeed, there was an implant rupture. It was not too bad yet, because the silicone was contained inside the capsule.

Still, those cases can get worse in the future. That’s why, after some deliberation, they decided to remove the implant and replace it for a new one.

Surgery was a success and the patient is feeling well now.
